First Day of Winter

I am a summer person. It's the first day of winter.

It always takes me a bit of time to get accustomed to the idea of short days, cold weather, and (dare I say it) snow, but I've grown to like winter for a couple of reasons, the most important one is that it is time to reflect, turn inside, and stay home. In recent months I've been out a lot. Much more than I like, in fact. It's time now for me to hibernate, get some work done in my studio, and prepare for the rebirth that is the promise of spring.

So, you may not see me out and about as much in the months ahead, but that's only because I'm preparing to shine when the days get longer, the weather is warmer, and the sun is radiating in all its glory.

There are a couple of upcoming events to note, however:

January 5, Joni Mitchell's Blue Concert (Definitely one to check out! This is one I'll be performing in.)
January 8, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino in GlobalFEST at Webster Hall (I'll be in the audience dancing up a storm.)
January 14, Alessandra Belloni at Mehanata (Leading the audience, dancing up a storm)

Hope to see you there!

My Latest Adventures

I've been relying a lot on micro blogging to update you about what I've been doing and what I have coming up on my schedule. I find it easy to write these quick news bites, but also to keep things short and to the point. It's also a reflection that I've been very busy traveling, working, hearing concerts, and studying, and not taking much time to reflect upon what it is I've done. However, I know this isn't the best method to promote all I'm doing!

Despite this, here's an attempt with a post of some of my upcoming adventures for which I hope you'll join me. Perhaps when I slow down, I'll take a few minutes to reflect on it all!

Learn the Tarantella: Southern Italy's Folk Dance
7:30 to 8:30, Thursday, 22 September
Corner of Mulberry Street and Prince Street
New York, NY
Free.

Part of the Feast of San Gennaro Gateway North festival, this interactive workshop will teach you about the regional folk music and dances known as the tarantella. You'll fall in love with the passion, emotion, and energy of these dances. Wear comfortable shoes and a smile!

---
Discover the Power of the Tarantella
Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino — Demonstration, Discussion, and Exchange

October 3, 2011, 6 p.m.
Casa Italiana NYU
24 West 12th Street
New York, NY 10011-8697

Free admission.

Today in Southern Italy the ancient music and dance form known as the tarantella is alive and as vibrant as ever, and the Pugliese folk music ensemble Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino is at its core. This evening, the seven-piece band and dancer will present a demonstration and discussion about the music and dance culture that annually draws thousands of people from across the globe to the deep south of Italy for the Notte della Taranta festival. Their presentation will connect you to the timeless power of the tarantella and its exuberance, tenderness, and passion. Be prepared to sing, dance, and be introduced to the unique technique used for playing Italian frame drums.

(I'm helping coordinate this event.)

Lilith Fair 2010 :: Help My Bid for the Village Stage

Lilith Fair, my favorite music festival, is returning to the scene this summer with a stop in New York (at PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ) on Saturday, July 31. I’m currently in the running to appear on the local emerging artist stage, but I need your help! The final three days of voting for the quarter finals are upon us, and out of over 330 artists, I’m right at the 100 mark with “Your Key.” New York is, of course, one of the most competitive marketplaces, so your votes will make a difference. You don’t need to be in New York to vote for me. Would you please take some time to help my bid? Here is how:

1. Create a fan profile on http://www.ourstage.com or through Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/lilithfairtour (Once on the page, choice the “Lilith Search” tab, click on “Lilith Local Search,” then choose the “Lilith Local Talent Search: New York” Channel.)
2. Find my Ourstage profile under Allison Scola (http://www.ourstage.com/profile/allisonscola), and mark “Your Key” as a favorite track and me as your favorite artist (on the right side) this will ensure that I come up in the judging at least once in the first twenty battles you face per day. Also feel free to leave a comment under “Your Key,” this helps too!
3. Judge in the Lilith Fair Local Talent Search: New York contest.
4. Note: OurStage is not like other contests, it uses algorithmic formulas to determine scoring, so your behavior as a judge plays a role in the value of your opinion. If you listen to songs for more than 30 seconds for example, it considers your opinion with more weight. So be sure to listen for longer than that! The goal is to become a Gavel God so your judging contribution is worth a lot!
5. You can use two different voting methods, Sort-4 or Head to Head. It’s up to you which you prefer. I’ve found Sort-4 to be a bit easier, especially when I’m working on the computer because it’s just like listening to the radio, and when I’ve heard all four songs, I rate them. Make sure you rate “Your Key” as “Best!”
6. Judge, judge, judge. This round ends at 11:59 PM on Sunday, May 23.

Thank you for your help! You’ll hear some great New York songwriters (and some not so good!), along the way and get a sense of what it’s like out there in Singer-Songwriter Land. Go team!

Thank you for your support!

"The Likes of Us" Premier and "Labor of Love"

I was thrilled to be at the premier screening of "The Likes of Us" film last night. This full-length feature film produced by Charles Greene and 700 Shades of Grey included 7 songs from A Braver Kind in its soundtrack as well as a cameo appearance by me as "Girlfriend with Knife." I have to say that I appreciate the excellent editing and camera-work employed for my big-screen debut. My 20 seconds on screen was hilarious!

I've learned that there will be another screening of the film in the next couple of months, and I hope to be able to invite friends to join me this time. Last night's screening was a private affair, with limited seating. I'll let you know when the next one will take place!

It's been a busy week... last Saturday, March 20th I performed with Alessandra Belloni and Daughters of Cybele in celebration of the spring equinox. It was a lovely show at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. What an incredible place! We had a terrific show in which I played clarinet, tamburro, castenettes, and various percussion instruments, sang, and danced various regional tarantellas. What fun we had!

Then Thursday, March 25 I was part of a very special event. The following paragraph was taken from the program...

The Triangle Shirtwaist Company was located one block east of Washington Square Park. The factory employed over 500 people on the top three floors of a ten story building. On March 25, 1911 a fire broke out on the 8th story then quickly spread to the floors above. On the 9th floor a critical exit was locked. Workers ran to the fire escape but it collapsed, dropping them to their death. Courageous elevator operators ran their cars for as long as they could. With the fire rapidly closing in on them, workers, unable to squeeze into the elevator cars, chose to jump down the elevator shaft. Fire trucks arrived, but their ladders only reached the 6th floor. People on the street watched in horror as the workers began to jump out the 9th story windows.

146 people died.

There was a trial but the owners, long known for their anti-union activities, were acquitted. The fire became a rallying cry for the international labor movement. Many of our fire safety laws were created in response to this tragic event.

Most of the 146 people who lost their lives were young Italian and Jewish immigrants, most of whom were women.

--From the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition

Since I learned of this fire many years ago after watching a PBS program about it, I have felt very strongly about remembering the young women and men who lost their lives in this worst industrial disaster in New York City history. I am proud to be part of a production called "Labor of Love" produced by TiPiace and written by Vincent Cuccia and JoAnn Robertozzi.

On Thursday, we performed a short version of our play with music at this 99th anniversary event.

The cast of "Labor of Love" includes me, Tre Bella (JoAnn Robertozzi, Lorraine Ferro, Rozie DeSanctis), Dimitri Minucci, and Jen Palumbo.

It was an emotional evening filled with wonderful performances inspired by the tragedy.
